An earthquake with the magnitude of 7.1 occurred near coasts of Tonga, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Center reported.
The earthquake epicenter was at the depth of 10 km, 76 km to the southeast from the city of Pangai with the population of about 1,700 people.

The tsunami threat was announced after the earthquake, the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration said. According to its data, the earthquake’s magnitude was 7.3.
The Tonga national disaster agency issued a warning to residents to stay away from beaches and shorelines.
"People living on the low lying coast areas please move to higher grounds or further in land," the Tonga National Disaster Risk Management Office wrote on Facebook.
