A tsunami advisory was in place late Monday after a strong earthquake struck off the coast of Japan's Miyazaki Prefecture, officials said.
The U.S. Geological Survey put the quake's preliminary magnitude at 6.8. The Japan Meteorological Agency said it had an intensity of lower 5 on the Japanese scale of 0 to 7.
The quake began at around 9:19 p.m., with its epicenter a few miles offshore at a depth of about 19 miles, Japanese and American officials said.
The Japanese weather agency issued a tsunami advisory for Miyazaki and Kochi prefectures, with expected heights of about 1 meter. One tsunami wave measuring about 8 inches reached some coasts and ports at about 10 p.m., authorities said. They warned residents to continue staying away from the coast and other waterways.
Meanwhile, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Center reported that the earthquake’s magnitude was 6.7. According to it, the epicenter was 10 kilometers east of the city of Miyazaki on Kyushu, population 311,000. The seismic focus was measured at a depth of 37 kilometers.

Japan’s Meteorological Agency withdrew a tsunami advisory after a 6.9 magnitude earthquake occurred off the coast of southwest Japan.
ReplyDeleteThe quake struck shortly after 9:19 p.m. local time (7:19 a.m. ET), the agency said, triggering an advisory for Miyazaki prefecture, in the island of Kyushu, as well as Japan’s southern Kochi prefecture.
An initial tsunami wave approximately 1 meter (3.2 feet) high made landfall within 30 minutes of the earthquake, the Associated Press reported, citing Japanese public broadcaster NHK TV.
