A 4.8-magnitude earthquake has struck near New York City, the US Geological Survey (USGS) said, shaking buildings and surprising residents in an area that rarely experiences notable seismic activity but apparently caused no major damage.
The quake's epicentre was near Whitehouse Station in New Jersey, and occurred just after 10:20am ET at a depth of 4.7km, the USGS said.
People reported feeling tremors from Pennsylvania to Massachusetts.
