Magnitude 7 earthquake hits China, warning of potentially widespread damage

A magnitude 7 earthquake rocked China near the borders with Kyrgyzstan and Kazakhstan, the European Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) said.

The epicenter was located 121 kilometers from the Aksu Prefecture and 270 kilometers southeast of Almaty.

No casualties or damage were immediately reported.

Local TV channels in the Indian capital New Delhi reported strong tremors in the city, about 1,400 kilometres away.

The USGS said casualties were possible, though none had been immediately reported in the mountainous, rural area where the earthquake struck.

“Significant damage is likely and the disaster is potentially widespread,” its report said.
