Bomb Cyclone, Winter Storm Elliott: At least 59 dead in US and Canada. Snowfall in Japan kills 17

 1. At least 59 deaths have been linked to a severe storm that continues to batter the US and Canada.

The US has recorded 55 fatalities, with a further four dead after a bus rolled over on icy roads in the Canadian province of British Columbia.

2. Heavy snowfall across large parts of Japan has killed 17 people over the last 10 days, with thousands of homes suffering power outages, Japanese officials said Monday.

Much of the country's west coast as well as the northern region of Hokkaido have seen persistent heavy snow in recent days.
