50 dead, dozens missing as floods, landslides hit several states in India

 

1. The ongoing monsoon season has reportedly claimed at least 50 lives and injured many more in several Indian states, including Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, Jharkhand and Orissa.



At least 36 deaths and several missing people have been reported since last Friday due to torrential rains and continued downpours. The state was hit by rain and landslides were reported in Mandi, Kangra and Chamba districts on Saturday.

Himachal Pradesh’s state disaster management agency said on Monday that rescue operations were underway and authorities were trying to repair roads and tracks damaged by the landslide. His record-breaking daily rainfall on August 20 was almost “he’s 300% more than normal” for this period.

Meanwhile, IMD predicts heavy rains in the state until August 26th. Four people have died and 13 are reportedly missing in the Himalayan state of Uttarakhand after reports of torrential rains in several parts of the state.

2. At least 40 people have died and many others were displaced by flash floods in north India over three days since August 19, 2022. Heavy rain flooded rivers, destroyed bridges and inundated homes in the mountainous states of Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand. Landslides and floods are common in India’s Himalayan north during the monsoon season from June to September.
