Buildings damaged & collapsed after Haiti hit with ‘major’ 7.2 quake

 A magnitude-7.2 earthquake has been reported near the coast of Haiti. The major tremor was more powerful than the 2010 quake that devastated the Caribbean nation.

The earthquake hit early on Saturday morning, with the United States Geological Survey putting its intensity at magnitude 7.2, or “major.” The epicenter was 12 kilometers (7.5 miles) northeast of Saint-Louis-du-Sud, a town of more than 50,000 inhabitants.

Severe damage has been reported on Haiti, with images showing partially collapsed buildings and rubble-strewn streets....

  1. Haiti has yet to fully recover from a quake a decade ago that killed more than 100,000 people.

  2. Officials told reporters there had been fatalities. Images of damaged and collapsed buildings were shared on social media.

    Haiti is still recovering from a devastating 2010 earthquake.

    The USGS said Saturday's quake was recorded at a depth of about 10km. Its epicentre was some 150km from the densely populated capital of Port-au-Prince.

    "I can confirm that there are deaths, but I don't yet have an exact toll," Jerry Chandler, Haiti's director of civil protection, told AFP news agency.

    "We're still collecting information."

    Images shared on social media showed homes and part of a church reduced to rubble.

  3. Un séisme de magnitude 7,2 a secoué Haïti samedi 14 août au matin, vers 8 h 30, heure locale (14 h 30, heure de Paris), selon le Centre américain de sismologie (USGS). Une alerte au tsunami a été émise peu après, avant d’être rapidement levée.

    Le bilan était difficile à établir après la catastrophe, mais le directeur de la protection civile du pays, Jerry Chandler, a annoncé que plusieurs personnes étaient mortes. « Mais je n’ai pas encore le bilan précis », a-t-il déclaré à l’Agence France-Presse (AFP). Le premier ministre, Ariel Henry, qui est en route pour le centre d’opération d’urgence national, à Port-au-Prince, devrait s’exprimer lors d’une conférence de presse, a-t-il ajouté.
