Chernobyl power plant staff report spike in nuclear activity within safe limits

--

Scientists have reported a spike in nuclear activity in the ruined nuclear reactor at Ukraine's Chernobyl power plant,... which has been covered over since 2016.

The rise in "nuclear flux density" has leveled off though and does not pose any threat of an uncontrolled nuclear reaction, according to staff on Wednesday.

High levels of radiation and damage prevent staff from accessing the chamber but they say they'll keep monitoring the situation in case it calls for future intervention.

Reactor number four at Chernobyl exploded in April 1986 during a botched safety test, resulting in the world's worst nuclear accident and the loss of thousands of lives.
