Suez Canal blocked as massive container ship runs aground

--

The Suez Canal – one of the world's most important shipping routes – has been blocked after a 400-metre-long container ship ran aground on Tuesday.

The MV Ever Given got stuck in the waterway during high winds, according to its operator.

The canal's authorities are working to free the ship, as a backlog of other vessels has built up north and south of the blockage.

Also today, Amazon warehouse workers and delivery drivers in Italy have staged a 24-hour strike over their working conditions.

  1. A giant container ship that has been stranded in the Suez Canal for more than a day has been partially refloated and traffic is expected to resume soon, port agent GAC said on Wednesday, citing the Suez Canal Authority.

The Ever Given container ship was now alongside the canal bank, GAC said on its website. The ship earlier appeared to be stuck diagonally across the width of the canal, blocking other shipping.
