Hurricane Matthew roared toward the southern Bahamas early Wednesday after leaving behind widespread destruction in Haiti and as forecasters predicted it would reach Florida's Atlantic Coast and South Carolina later this week.
Matthew had top sustained winds of 125 mph and was heading north at 8 mph, the National Hurricane Center said.
At least 11 deaths have been attributed to powerful storm as it has marched across the Caribbean this week, five of them in Haiti.
Officials said five have died in Haiti and four in the neighboring Dominican Republic. In the tiny Caribbean island nation of St. Vincent and the Grenadines one death has been reported and another as far south as Colombia.
