A strong 6.2 magnitude earthquake shook western Japan on Friday, the US Geological Survey said, but there was no risk of a tsunami. The quake, at a shallow depth of 15 kilometres.
The quake, which was 15kilometers in depth, hit near Kurayoshi city, the USGS said.
There were no immediate reports of damage and no tsunami warning has been issued.
The Japanese public broadcaster NHK said there were reports of damage coming in, including collapsing houses and power outages that affected 30,000 homes across the prefecture.
Japan, which sits along the so-called Ring of Fire, is no stranger to earthquakes.
