Bulgaria waits for Rosatom experts to discuss Belene NPP problems

A working group of experts from Russian state-owned nuclear corporation Rosatom will visit Bulgaria in late August to discuss problems related to Belene nuclear power plant (NPP) project, Bulgaria’s Energy Minister Temenuzhka Petkova said on Thursday.

"The working group of Rosatom state-owned corporation will come at the end of August, with which we will discuss Belene case," the Minister said. The government of Bulgaria "should find a quick but not a hot-headed decision" in cooperation with the Bulgarian Energy Holding and the National Electric Company, she added.

"This decision should a sophisticated and a pragmatic one, giving an opportunity to finalize this process in the best way for Bulgaria. We do not hold negotiations on the Belene project, we hold talks in connection with the award of the arbitration court," Petkova said.

  • The court satisfied main claims of Atomstroiexport on payment for completed work and ordered expenses. The decision made by the court under the International Chamber of Commerce is final.
Sofia refused to build the Belene Nuclear Power Plant in 2012. Atomstroiexport was contracted to construct the power plant under the contract signed in 2006.
