Researchers from MISiS National Research Technology University developed a technology of rare-earth metals recovery from mineral fertilizer waste, press service of the university said on Monday.
"We developed a closed-cycle technology: construction gypsum and high-purity concentrate of rare-earth metals are leached in the course of phosphogypsum processing from base feedstock. The mix is further separated into individual elements using a series of rotary extractors, concentrated, and becomes a high quality raw material for high technology production facilities," scientific director of the project Alexander Medvedev said.
The technology developed by scientists makes possible to produce valuable rare-earth metals and construction grade gypsum from waste and concurrently dispose of it.
Pilot production has already started. Developers plan to receive the first lot of products by 2016 year-end.
