Houses, church damaged after Indonesia's powerful quake

As many as eighteen houses and one church were damaged in North Maluku province after a powerful quake of 6.4 Richter scale struck off eastern Indonesia earlier Wednesday, official of disaster agency said in Jakarta.

The damages took place in Batang Dua sub-district, the nearest area with the quake epicenter, Sutopo Purwo Nugroho, spokesman of national disaster management agency told Xinhua via phone.

Four out of the 18 houses were severely damaged, Mr. Sutopo added.

A shallow and powerful-quake measuring 6.4 Richter scale jolted at 02 : 15 a.m. Jakarta time Wednesday (1915 GMT Tuesday), but it was not potential for tsunami and did not leave casualty, official of the meteorology and geophysics agency told Xinhua by phone.

The epicenter of the quake was at 124 km northwest Ternate of North Maluku province and the depth at 58 km under sea bed, the official said.

The USGS reported that the quake was at 6.5 magnitude.
