Oil Spills May Cause Great Damage in Peruvian Amazon

 Scientists said that the recent leak of 3,000 barrels of oil in Peru’s Amazon jungle will cause incalculable damage.


The oil spill occurred on January 25 and February 4 to a lack of maintenance of the company’s NorPeruano Pipeline.

The crude, spilled in the Loreto Department in the northeastern part of the country, has contaminated at least 30 kilometers of the Chiriaco River and has spread into Marañon River, one of the main tributaries that feed the Amazon drainage area.

Tony Mori, a botanical specialist in Peruvian Amazonian flora and vegetation, thinks remedy actions may not be enough to reverse the damage.
