8 Severely Injured as Balcony Collapses at New Zealand Concert

Authorities said eight people suffered serious injuries on Friday when a house balcony collapsed during a rock concert in the city of Dunedin.

Police told Radio New Zealand that the incident took place shortly before 8:00 p.m. (local time) as the concert by the rock band Six60 was underway. The eight badly injured victims were rushed to the Dunedin Hospital. Six other sustained minor injuries.

Police spokesman Inspector John Doherty said the scene had been cleared and cordoned off while officers investigate the accident. The area is popular with students of the city's University of Otago. A student said there were at least 300 people in the courtyard below the balcony.

  • Apparently, some 20 revelers were jumping up and down on the balcony, which was intended to accommodate five people.
  • Police ordered them to stop but they did not and suddenly the balcony collapsed, falling four meters on to the bitumen below.

Authorities initially had a hard time getting people out because the site was congested due to the large number of concert-goers.
