The death toll in the earthquake in Taiwan has increased to five

The death toll in a powerful earthquake in Taiwan has increased to five people the Reuters . Earlier reported two victims.

The bodies were found under the rubble of a 17-storey residential building in Tainan in the south of the island among the dead – girl who was 10 days. Rescuers using dogs and special equipment trying to find those who remain under the rubble.

A number of other buildings in the city of two million were injured and are unsuitable for further stay. Some houses in particular tilted dangerously after the quake.

An earthquake measuring 64 happened early in the morning on Saturday February 6 at 04 : 00 local time (23:00 MSK Friday). Its epicenter was 43 kilometers south-east of Tainan. Fireplace adjusted the US Geological Survey at the depth of 23 kilometers.

In total according to the fire department the city of 115 victims were hospitalized. In the rescue operation mobilized 810 soldiers.

The Chinese government has expressed its willingness to assist Taiwan if necessary.

    Relatives of missing residents from a 16-storey apartment complex felled by a powerful earthquake in Taiwan that killed 13 people were praying for miracles Saturday as rescuers scoured the rubble for survivors.

    The cluster of buildings in the historic southern city of Tainan were full of families who had gathered for Lunar New Year celebrations when it collapsed, with residents still trapped inside on Saturday night and the death toll rising.

    Tainan bore the brunt of the 6.4 magnitude quake and the disaster zone centres around the residential complex containing almost 100 homes which were toppled.

    The four blocks at the Wei-kuan complex were left lying on their sides with twisted metal girders exposed and clouds of dust rising from the jumbled concrete.

    Among the 11 people killed when the apartment buildings collapsed were a 10-day-old baby girl and two other children, the National Fire Agency said.

  2. Taiwan Quake Death Toll Rises to 29...

    Authorities said the death toll from the earthquake that rocked southern Taiwan has risen to 29 by 8:00 p.m. (local time) on Sunday.

    The collapse of the 17-storey Wei Guan building has claimed 27 lives. At around 1:50 p.m., rescue workers managed to pull a man from the rubble but he later succumbed to injuries. A six-month-old girl was also rescued but died. Her father was also among the fatalities.

    Rescue workers are racing against time to find more than 120 individuals who remain trapped in the rubble of the building. Over 600 rescue workers, including firemen and volunteers, as well as 44 ambulances and 105 fire engines are involved in the search and rescue operation.

    In the city of Tainan, eight buildings collapsed and five others were damaged.

    The China Earthquake Networks Center said the 6.7-magnitude tremor hit Kaohsiung at 3:57 a.m. (Beijing Time) on Saturday at a depth of 15 km.
