U.S. Blizzard 2016: 14 Dead Along East Coast

WASHINGTON -- A monstrous winter storm battered the U.S. East Coast on Saturday and appeared poised in some areas to dump a lot more snow than initially expected.

Some parts of Maryland and West Virginia received more than three feet of snow, grounding thousands of flights, halting the flow of traffic on highways and shutting down travel in the country's biggest metropolis.

Authorities said 14 people from New York and North Carolina have died in the storm. New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo said up to 30 inches of snow could be on the ground in the southern section of the city by storm's end.

That is 14 inches higher than the 16 inches that was predicted for the city.

Meanwhile, authorities imposed a travel ban on all roads in New York and Long Island. The storm caused major traffic chaos on highways in Kentucky, Pennsylvania and West Virginia.

On Friday night, a road accident caused a 7-mile-long backlog on the Pennsylvania Turnpike. About 500 vehicles were stuck there through Saturday afternoon.
