At Least 18 People Killed as Ferry Boat Sinks in Egypt

CAIRO -- State TV reported on Friday that at least 18 people were killed on Thursday night when a ferry boat sank in the Nile River. According to the report, the incident took place in Kafr el-Sheikh province, about 140 km north of Cairo.

Kafr el-Sheikh Gov. el-Sayed Nasr stated that the boat was transporting people between two towns in Beheira and Kafr el-Sheikh. The official news agency MENA reported that there were 22 people on board the ferry when the tragedy struck. It added that rescue workers are still looking for more possible victims.

Authorities are still trying to determine the cause of the fatal accident, and Nasr noted that investigations will reveal if the ferry sank because of overloading or because of harsh weather conditions.
