Authorities said the product tanker Nadezhda ran aground off Nevelsk on Sakhalin Island in the North Pacific Ocean.
The ship was transporting 786 tons of diesel and fuel oil, some of which spilled into the ocean after the vessel suffered a breach in the hull and cargo tanks.
Bad weather in the region threw the Nadezhda to the rocky shallow, and the crew members were unable to prevent grounding because of the strong winds.
All the sailors on board are in good health and did not sustain any serious injuries. Local officials sent rescue teams and two cleaning vessels to help with water and shore oil collection.
Over 100 people are working to avert any environmental disaster.
