A clean-up operation started on Wednesday in Sydney’s southern suburb of Kurnell after two massive thunderstorms hit the Australian coast, damaging power and sewage lines, a local emergency service said.
New South Wales State Emergency Service said residents were slowly returning home to assess the damage. Around 30 houses were destroyed and roofs were torn off more homes.
"There is no power or sewerage available in the area and will likely remain this way until tomorrow [Thursday]," a news alerts portal for the Sutherland Shire community said.
Severe thunderstorms brought destructive winds, large hailstones and heavy rainfalls to the area, prompting residents to seek cover.
Sutherland Shire Council’s Mayor Carmelo Pesce is due to meet Kurnell residents later on Wednesday at the local evacuation center to provide them with updates and answer questions.
