Pollution from oil spill on Albanian coastline improves

Albanian agriculture minister Edmond Panariti on Monday said the environmental situation in the Albanian city of Durres that was hit by the recent oil spill has improved, and that the damages to ocean life were superficial.

In the meantime, Panariti has ordered the suspension of fishing activities in the area contaminated by oil poured illegally by unidentified ships in Durres until laboratory tests are completed.

Since last Saturday, when the coastline of Durres city in western Albania was sullied by oil, Albanian Armed and Naval Forces have been working intensively in collaboration with local government to clean up the disaster.

 Patrol ships and specialized vessels, as well as 35 army troops, have been sent by the naval forces, while the air force has provided helicopters to monitor the Durres coastline.
