Deadly flash floods strike French Riviera

At least 17 people were killed in violent storms and floods that struck the French Riviera overnight Saturday, including three people in a retirement home which was flooded after the River Brague burst its banks.


  •     French President François Hollande visited the Riviera following the floods that residents said were the worst they had ever seen.
  •     More than 17 cm of rain fell in Cannes in just two hours on Saturday night.
  •     Around 27,000 homes were without electricity on Sunday afternoon.
  •     The worst affected towns are Cannes, Biot, Golfe-Juan and Mandelieu-la-Napoule.
  •     All rail traffic between Nice and Toulon was cancelled on Sunday morning.
