Huge explosion, fire at fuel depot near Kiev kill several

A huge fire and explosion on Tuesday killed several firefighters and hospitalized six others at a fuel depot outside the Ukrainian capital Kiev, according to the interior minister.

"An explosion at a fuel depot near Vasylkiv," Arsen Avakov said on Twitter, adding, "Gigantic. Firemen have died."

Avakov later tweeted that six firefighters were injured by the fire and sent to the hospital, while rescuers were finding another six firemen who lost connection.

At least four people died in the oil depot fire in the Kiev region, the UNN Ukrainian news agency reports citing a source in the State Emergency Service of Ukraine.

According to the source, all the four were firefighters.

According to the State Emergency Service of Ukraine, firefighters extinguished one fuel tank, while 16 more are still burning.

"As of 07:00 June 9 the fire of one 900-cubic-meter fuel tank has been put out, fire fighters continue extinguishing 16 more tanks," the State Emergency Service of Ukraine said.

The prosecutor’s office of the Kiev region has opened a criminal investigation into the incident under the article "Violation of safety rules in explosive facilities or in explosive workshops."
