Japan to Restart 1 more Atomic Reactor

Japan’s Nuclear Regulation Authority (NRA) on Wednesday gave the green light to restart one more atomic reactor, RT news website reported.

It said the reactor No.3 at Ikata nuclear power plant in western Japan meets safety guidelines.

The statement comes after similar decisions on four other reactors at two different plants, AFP said.

For an actual restart there must first be a public consultation and local authorities must also agree.

Last month, a court granted an injunction banning operators from restarting two green lit reactors amid concerns over lax safety standards.

  1. Japan’s nuclear regulator signed off on the basic safety of a reactor at a third nuclear plant on Wednesday, as the country inches toward rebooting its atomic industry more than four years after the crisis began at Tepco’s Fukushima No.1 facility...

The decision will be a boost for operator Shikoku Electric Power Co., which relied on its sole Ikata nuclear power station in southwestern Japan for about 40 percent of its electricity output before the meltdowns at Fukushima led to the shutdown of all the country’s reactors.

But the reactor is not expected to go back online before winter, as Shikoku Electric has yet to obtain local approval and finish other necessary procedures.
