Water diversion project quenches Beijing's thirst

The total amount of water coming from the South-to-North Water Diversion Project to Beijing has reached over 100 million cubic meters since December 27 last year, easing the water shortage of the city, said the city's water authority on Monday.

The water that comes from the pipeline is used for both Beijing's daily needs as well as to refresh its bodies of water, like underground water, major rivers and lakes and reservoirs.

Around 1.3 million cubic meters of water that the city uses each day is from the south. It is estimated that water from the south will supply over 50 percent of the water used in the city by May.
