Trilateral gas talks between Russia, Ukraine and the European Union slated for March 2 have been confirmed, European Commission spokeswoman on energy Anna-Kaisa Itkonen said Thursday.
"Trilateral gas talks Russia-Ukraine-Commission confirmed. Maros Sefcovic meets with RU & UA Energy Ministers in Brussels on Monday 2 March," Itkonen said on her Twitter account.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said earlier in the day that the Russian Energy Ministry and the country's energy giant Gazprom were in constant contact with their European partners regarding the matter of gas deliveries.
The subject of Russian gas transit through Ukraine to the European Union has been a matter of concern for the bloc in light of the strained relations between Moscow and Kiev and Ukraine's gas debt to Russia.
In June 2014, Gazprom suspended gas supplies to Ukraine due to Kiev's debt that exceeded $5 billion at the time. The company resumed gas deliveries in December after Kiev had paid off part of its debt and agreed to make prepayments for deliveries in future.
On Wednesday, Russian President Vladimir Putin said Moscow would suspend gas deliveries to Ukraine once again unless Kiev made a further prepayment.
