Between 550,000 and 1.4 million people in West Africa could be infected with the Ebola virus by January 20, 2015, according to a report issued on Tuesday by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
The top range of the estimate, 1.4 million, assumes that the number of cases officially cited so far, 5,864 according to the count kept by the World Health Organization, is significantly underreported, and that it is likely that 2.5 times as many cases, or nearly 20,000, have in fact occurred.
CDC emphasized that the projections, based on an epidemiological model that takes into account how many people each Ebola patient eventually infects as well as other factors, is based on data available in August.

- They therefore do not account for the recently announced U.S. government Ebola relief effort, which includes sending 3,000 members of the armed forces to the Ebola-stricken region.

Health officials say at least 80 people exposed to US Ebola patient...
ReplyDeleteAs many as 80 people had contact with the first person to be diagnosed with the deadly Ebola virus in the United States, a significant jump from the 18 cited earlier, NBC News reported today.
Health officials said four members of the man's family had been ordered to stay home as a precautionary measure and urged hospitals across the country to heed the lessons from Dallas, where a hospital initially sent the patient home, possibly exposing more people to the deadly virus.
The Dallas County health and human services said 80 people came into contact with the Ebola patient or his family, NBC reported today. Director Zachary Thompson said the 80 included anyone who had some kind of contact with or exposure to the patient.
Public health authorities have been calling on US healthcare workers to screen patients for signs of illness, question patients about their travel history and rule out Ebola for those who have been to West Africa, where more than 3,000 people have died in the epidemic.
"Unfortunately, that did not happen in this case," said Dr. Anthony Fauci, head of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases. "We just need to put that behind us and look ahead and make sure that in the future that doesn't happen again."...............http://www.buenosairesherald.com/article/171231/health-officials-say-at-least-80-people-exposed-to-us-ebola-patient
