One of the largest and
most daunting salvage operations ever undertaken is under way with an
attempt to pull the shipwrecked Costa Concordia upright.
The operation was delayed for three hours because of an overnight storm, but began at 09:00 local time (07:00 GMT).Righting the cruise ship is expected to take up to 12 hours.
Engineers have never tried to lift such a huge ship so close to land. Thirty-two people died when it hit rocks.
A senior engineering official says the Costa Concordia still has not broken free of the rocks on which she is lying, the BBC's Alan Johnston reports from the scene.
The bodies of two of the dead, a passenger and a crew member, have never been recovered and may be found during the operation.
The Italian Civil Protection Authority said the sea and weather conditions had mostly been right for the attempt.

Fabio Gabrielli from the Italian Civil Protection Authority said that the unprecedented salvage effort "reached degree zero, which was our target".

ReplyDeleteΗ επιχείρηση ανόρθωσης και ρυμούλκησης του κρουαζιερόπλοιου Costa Concordia πρόκειται να συνεχισθεί καθ' όλη την διάρκεια της νύχτας, όπως δήλωσε απόψε ο υπεύθυνος της ιταλικής Υπηρεσίας Πολιτικής Προστασίας Φράνκο Γκαμπριέλι.
Σύμφωνα με ιταλικά μέσα ενημέρωσης για την ολοκλήρωση της προσπάθειας θα χρειασθούν τουλάχιστον δεκαοκτώ ώρες, ενώ αρχικά η επιχείρηση αυτή είχε υπολογιστεί ότι θα διαρκούσε περίπου δώδεκα ώρες.
«Δεν με ενδιαφέρει η διάρκεια της επιχείρησης, αυτό που έχει σημασία είναι το τελικό αποτέλεσμα», επανέλαβε ο Γκαμπριέλι.
Στις 18:00 (ώρα Ιταλίας, 19:00 ώρα Ελλάδας) η όλη προσπάθεια διακόπηκε για περίπου μια ώρα, ώστε να επιτραπεί στους τεχνικούς να αφαιρέσουν ένα μέρος από τα ατσάλινα νήματα, τα οποία, στην παρούσα φάση, δεν χρησιμεύουν για την επιστροφή του πλοίου σε οριζόντια θέση.
Μέχρι τώρα η κλίση του πλοίου έχει μεταβληθεί κατά 13 μοίρες. Ο εκπρόσωπος της Costa Crosiere, Φράνκο Πορτσελάκια, δήλωσε στο ειδησεογραφικό τηλεοπτικό δίκτυο Sky Italia ότι «το πλοίο αντιδρά με τον καλύτερο δυνατό τρόπο αφού η μετακίνησή του γίνεται ομοιόμορφα, ακριβώς όπως είχε προβλεφθεί».
«Ο αγώνας δεν έχει τελειώσει, η προσπάθεια δεν ολοκληρώθηκε. Αύριο, όταν η επιχείρηση θα έχει ολοκληρωθεί θα μπορούμε να πούμε ότι όλα πήγαν καλά», τόνισε, τέλος, ο Γκαμπριέλι.
Υπενθυμίζεται ότι το κρουαζιερόπλοιο τραβούν τριάντα έξι ατσάλινα νήματα, με στόχο να μορέσει να επανέλθει σε οριζόντια θέση. Η κλίση του πλοίου, στο τέλος της όλης επιχείρησης, θα πρέπει να έχει μεταβληθεί κατά εξήντα πέντε μοίρες.

ReplyDeleteAFP - Salvage operators in Italy lifted the Costa Concordia cruise ship upright from its watery grave off the island of Giglio in the biggest project of its kind.
The ship's horn sounded for the first time since the January 13, 2012 tragedy, its sound mixing with applause and cheers in the port in a dramatic climax to the massive salvage operation.
The 290-metre (951-foot), 114,500-ton vessel -- longer than the Titanic and more than twice as heavy -- rose from the sea like a ghost ship.
The side of the ship that had been underwater was rusty and brown after 20 months in the sea, contrasting with the white of the exposed side.
"The parbuckling operation has been completed," said Franco Gabrielli, head of the civil protection agency and project overseer, using the technical term for the rotation.
