Kiev requested the European Commission to immediately send a monitoring mission to its gas transportation network, the country’s national oil and gas company Naftogaz said Friday.
"In order to prevent a possible crisis, the Ukrainian side has requested the European Commission to immediately send a monitoring mission to facilities where Russian gas enters and leaves Ukraine in order to ensure an independent control of the situation," the company said.
Gazprom CEO Alexei Miller warned earlier Friday that Ukraine might start to siphon off Russian gas. He said the 2009 gas contract with Kiev envisages the possibility of limiting gas deliveries under such circumstances, including a total cessation of gas supplies.
Later in the day, Kiev accused Moscow of trying to provoke another gas crisis.
