Dozens dead after powerful earthquake hits Ecuador coast. A state of emergency was declared (Depth 10 km, local time: 18:58)

A powerful, 7.8-magnitude earthquake shook Ecuador's central coast on Saturday, killing at least 28 people and spreading panic hundreds of kilometres away as it collapsed homes and buckled a major overpass.

The U.S. Geological Survey said the shallow quake, the strongest in decades to hit Ecuador, was centred 27 kilometres (16 miles) south-southeast of Muisne, a sparsely populated area of fishing ports that's popular with tourists.

Vice-President Jorge Glas said in a televised address that there were initial reports of 28 dead in the cities of Manta, Portoviejo and Guayaquil -- all several hundred kilometres from where the quake struck shortly after nightfall.     El vicepresidente de la República, Jorge Glas, informó que hasta el momento se han registrado 28 muertos producto del terremoto que se registró en el país. El temblor duró entre 40 y 50 segundos.

    Un terremoto de magnitud 7,8 sacudió la costa central de Ecuador este sábado.

    El vicepresidente de la República, Jorge Glas, informó que hasta el momento se han registrado 28 muertos producto del movimiento telúrico..

    "Lastimosamente hemos obtenido información que hasta el momento hay 16 personas fallecidas en Portoviejo, 10 en Manta y dos en Guayas", dijo Glass desde las instalaciones del ECU 911.

    Además, el vicepresidente informó que se ha decretado el estado de excepción en todo el país "para resguardar el orden público".

    "Ecuatorianos les pedimos que estén muy alertas, con mucha cautela, que guarden la calma en este momento. Toda la fuerza pública está movilizada", dijo el vicepresidente.

    De acuerdo al Servicio Geológico de Estados Unidos, el sismo tuvo epicentro entre las localidades de Pedernales y Muisne, un área con puertos de pesca artesanal poco poblada que es popular con los turistas.

    The U.S. Geological Survey says the shallow 7.8 magnitude quake struck late Saturday along the South American country's coast.

    It was felt 170 kilometers away in Quito, the capital, where it knocked out electricity and cell phone coverage in several neighborhoods. Quito buildings swayed for about 40 seconds, causing people to rush into the streets.

    A bridge collapsed in the port city of Guayaquil.

    In Manta, the airport was closed after the control tower was damaged.

    Vice President Jorge Glas says the national guard has been mobilized to maintain public order.

    A tsunami warning has been issued, but there were no immediate reports of waves.
