Authorities said the death toll from the 6.7 magnitude earthquake that hit Tainan city on Saturday morning has risen to 67 as of 9:48 p.m. (local time) on Thursday, with 57 people still unaccounted for.
The Wei Guan building collapsed seconds after the earthquake struck. A total of 238 people have been rescued from the building, but 57 are still missing six days after the tremor.
The China Earthquake Administration said the quake rocked southern Taiwan at 3:57 a.m. on Saturday. Rescue workers began operations soon after the disaster struck and are still working to dismantle the toppled building and find the missing. However, 72 hours had passed since a survivor was rescued.
The quake, which the China Earthquake Administration said had a magnitude of 6.7, hit southern Taiwan at 3:57 a.m. Saturday, just two days ahead of the Chinese Lunar New Year.
