Ukraine buys 80% of gas it needs in the European Union (EU), Ukrainian Energy and Coal Industry Minister Volodymyr Demchyshyn said Friday while delivering a report in the government.
"We buy 80% of gas in the EU, so dependence on [Russian energy giant] Gazprom has considerably lowered," Demchyshyn said.
Ukraine should by the start of the heating season pump into its underground gas storage facilities at least 19 billion cubic meters of gas, which will make it possible to guarantee its uninterrupted transit to Europe.
As of August 23, according to data of Gas Storage Europe (GSE), gas reserves in Ukrainian underground storage facilities totaled 14.074 billion cubic meters.
