Bulgaria’s Kozloduy nuclear plant begins maintenance on unit 5

Bulgaria’s sole nuclear power plant, at Kozloduy on the Danube River, said that it has shut down the 1000MW fifth unit for scheduled annual maintenance and refuelling.

The reactor was shut down early on April 11 and was expected to be reconnected to the power grid in the second half of May, the plant said in a statement. The other 1000MW unit at Kozloduy was working at a workload in line with power grid operator ESO’s orders, the plant said.

As part of the routine maintenance shutdown, the plant would carry out “a large part of the activities related to surveying the key components and systems, with the goal of extending the life cycle of the fifth unit and renewing its operation licence past 2017,” the statement said.

Kozloduy now has two 1000MW operational units, with talks underway with US firm Westinghouse on a possible deal to add another 1000MW reactor to the plant. Bulgaria shut down four smaller reactors, 440MW each, prior to joining the European Union in 2007.
